My Top 10 Self Care Rituals With Essential Oils

If you've been reading along for some time now, you know that my rock bottom came in the first year of college when I was stuck in a painful and persistent struggle with my health and hormones after the passing of my dad. I had polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, severe adrenal fatigue, depression, anxiety, acne, and insomnia. And to top it all off, I was waging an ugly war on my body with binge eating, diet pills, excessive exercise, and restrictive eating. 

I felt completely broken and in a desperate attempt to understand how to heal myself, I read every book, scientific study, and listened to every lecture on the subject that I could get my hands on. 

After a few years of treating the symptoms with medications, I decided to pursue a more natural approach. I wasn't interested in medical, dietary, or supplement regimens focused solely on treating the symptoms - I wanted an approach that would address the roots of dis-ease in my mind, body and spirit. I didn't want a 6-month, restrictive candida diet that kept me watching life from the sidelines while feeling deprived and obsessed with food and my body. I didn't want 20 expensive supplements to replace the medications I was letting go of. And I didn't want to create further symptoms with stressful healing strategies. I was committed to finding a different way. A way that was inspired by mother nature, uniquely feminine, simple, and pleasure-rich.

My path to healing, and the path I take my clients on, focuses on using gentle practices and nature's medicine to activate the body's innate healing capacity. What I've discovered is that simple is powerful, and subtle healing techniques reign supreme when working with the female body.

ESSENTIAL OILS + SIMPLE DAILY RITUALS

Technically speaking, essential oils are volatile aromatic compounds that occur naturally in plants. They serve protective, reproductive and regenerative processes for the plant, warding off pests, attracting friendly insects, and helping the plant heal from physical injury. And when applied by humans, they work on many levels: spiritual, emotional, mental, environmental, and physical wellbeing. Each is a vital substance of nature, yielding a unique healing force on the mind, body and spirit. 

These oils can anchor and amplify self care rituals throughout the day, and their therapeutic application can be experienced aromatically, topically, or internally.
 

HERE ARE MY 10 FAVORITE DAILY RITUALS FOR RENEWAL + RELAXATION:

1.) I add a drop of Lemon oil or Wild orange oil to my water in the morning. It provides the detoxifying effects of lemon without any damage or corrosion to the tooth enamel. Lemon and orange support detoxification mechanisms in the body when ingested and jumpstart digestion. And they make water taste yummy.

2.) Before my morning workout or yoga class, I apply Peppermint oil in apricot kernel or almond oil to my temples, behind my ears, and on my wrists. Peppermint oil awakens the life force and enlivens the body.

3.) I add Peppermint and Wild Orange Oil to my coconut oil before oil pulling while in the shower to support a healthy balance of microorganisms in the mouth.

4.) I melt coconut oil in a glass container by putting it in a bowl of hot water, or use sesame, apricot kernel, or almond oil, and then I add Rose, Frankincense, Lavender, and Wild orange (typically 6-12 drops per ounce of carrier oil). After dry brushing and showering I practice abhyanga or self massage (including breast massage) by applying the oil with long slow, mindful strokes. This instantly relaxes my nervous system, drops me into my body, and reconnects me with my sensuality. I feel relaxed and calmed for my morning meditation practice.

5.) During my work day, I apply InTune to my wrists, temples, and neck in order to get into the creative flow and be present with the task at hand. I set the timer for 55 minutes and work without distraction, take a 5 minute movement and breathing break, and go again.

6.) Before meals, I take 10 relaxed, slow, and deep breaths in order to prepare my body for optimal digestion and assimilation. Following meals, I sip 4 oz of water with 1 drop of Digestzen in order to reduce bloating.

7.) Before bed I put Vetiver on the soles of my feet and sometimes on my chest and take deep breaths to relax myself for deep slumber.

8.) Once or twice a week I add 4-8 drops of either Lavender or Balance essential oil to 1-2 cups of Epsom salts for a grounding and nourishing bath. Lavender soaks away stress and Balance is a strengthening tonic for the nervous system helping with fatigue, exhaustion, immune and adrenal support.  

9.) Before and during my cycle I will massage Clarycalm on my chest and abdomen in circular motions to support hormonal balance, release challenging emotions, and to strengthen the nervous system. 

10.) And when I'm going out on a hot date with my man, I use Whisper as an all natural perfume without the suspect ingredients of conventional perfumes.
